Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) have become more powerful and clinical data more easily extractable. Physicians recognize the power of the EHR clinical database and are increasingly interested in pulling data themselves. Many EHRs provide physicians with user-friendly self-service reporting tools that enable extraction of patient data directly from the EHR. However, physician training on how to use these tools has been limited.

Objective: To develop a curriculum for physicians to enhance understanding of these tools in hospital operations and scholarly work

Design/Methods: Physician informaticists developed 2 interactive sessions to train physicians on self-service reporting tools available in our EHR at a stand-alone, academic, tertiary children’s hospital. These included a didactic on EHR-based data literacy followed by interactive tutorials on Epic® (Verona, WI) SlicerDicer and Reporting Workbench (RWB). Due to physical distancing guidelines, all didactic and interactive tutorials occurred via video conference (Zoom) in April 2020. We assessed participants’ knowledge, confidence and application of EHR-related data literacy skills and self-service reporting tools before, after, and 3-month post session using a REDCap® survey.

Results: 36 physicians participated in virtual SlicerDicer and RWB training sessions from April - August 2021. 16 surveys were collected after SlicerDicer and RWB sessions. 22 surveys were collected at 3-month post assessment. Regarding data literacy knowledge, the pre-test average score was 62%, which then increased to 93% (p < 0.05) immediately post-session falling to 74% at 3 months post training (p = 0.05). Surveys showed an increase in tool utilization from 29% (RWB) and 34% (SlicerDicer) pre-session to 56% (RWB) and 44% (SlicerDicer) at 3-month post assessment (Figure 1). Participants also reported an increase in confidence in performing certain SlicerDicer-specific tasks such as model selection (p < 0.05), criteria selection (p < 0.05), and data visualization (p < 0.05). Similar confidence increase was also observed in RWB-specific tasks (p < 0.05). 85 percent of participants expressed that they would be interested in attending a more advanced follow-up workshop in the future.Conclusion(s): Virtual physician training on self-service reporting tools such as Epic® SlicerDicer and Reporting Workbench are effective in increasing data literacy knowledge, tool utilization, and confidence. Physicians expressed interest in more advanced self-service reporting training in the future. Further study using objective measures on tools application rather than self-report is warranted.
