What are your first thoughts when you are asked to assume a new leadership role within your division, department or institution? Whether you are asked to consider the role of medical director, leader of a research collaborative, or to develop a strategy for community engagement, are you confident about your “leadership presence?” If you feel like an imposter, it can affect your ability to “show up” for success. This challenge may be more common for women and underrepresented individuals because one’s identity can be threatened by bias, discriminatory experiences, microaggressions, and marginalization. To engage with and enlist others as a leader, one must be able to convey confidence through your “leadership presence.”
During this workshop, participants who have already assumed leadership positions or are interested in leadership opportunities will learn about leadership presence and examine how manifesting a strong sense of oneself as a leader can allow others to see you as a leader who can make a difference. Through skill building exercises, participants will explore how to acknowledge their unique strengths to combat self-doubt (imposter syndrome) and showcase their capabilities as a leader. Using small group discussion and dyad practice with feedback, participants will analyze leadership presence and five behavioral traits associated with this important aspect of leadership development.
Workshop leaders are senior academic pediatric leaders who will share their own experiences and provide feedback throughout the workshop. By the end of the workshop, participants will be empowered and ready to implement specific strategies to enhance their leadership presence.
