Have you ever daydreamed of winning a gold medal or shooting the game-winning shot in overtime? Athletes often think about that moment and they reflect on the coaches that helped them get there. Coaches are essential components to success but what is the role of coaching in medical education? Recently, there has been an increase in formal coaching programs to support learners through direct observation and feedback. That level of engagement describes the role of every clinical teacher, who is by default a coach, even if they don’t know it.
In this highly interactive, learner-centered workshop, participants will work in groups to create a guide for coaches in different clinical settings. We will begin with a group analysis and discussion of clinical teaching cases to determine positive and negative behaviors of the attending. After an introduction to the literature on coaching in medical education, including emerging data from a study being conducted by one of the presenters, facilitated groups will identify behaviors that impact the clinical learning environment. Presenters will offer a review of explicit coaching behaviors that may be useful. Groups will then brainstorm their own model for ideal coaching behaviors in their clinical setting using a framework derived from the coaching and growth mindset literature. Once these models are designed, groups will present their models to the entire audience and receive coaching and feedback. In the end, all participants will receive all frameworks to use personally, to train colleagues, and ultimately help all learners win the gold medal.
