Physicians are at substantial risk of burn out compared to other US workers (1), with as many as 45.8% of physicians experiencing at least one symptom of burnout (2). This trend has only increased over the years as physicians continue to report greater dissatisfaction with work life balance compared to the general US working population over the same time interval (3). Female physicians experience unique challenges in establishing work life balance because of the parallel relationship between motherhood impacting one’s career and career impacting decisions surrounding motherhood (4). Parenting is particularly stressful during residency training because of the competing demands of fulfilling clinical roles as learners and practitioners as well as personal roles as parents and partners (5). In the era of COVID, studies continually report high levels of psychological distress among health care workers (6), with women being disproportionately impacted by virtue of making up the majority of the health care workforce (7). The sequelae of work life imbalance and job dissatisfaction are poorer mental and physical health of the physician (8) leading to lower quality of care for patients (9-11).
Physicians of all levels of training are invited to join this interactive workshop to discuss the impact of parenting in medicine and identify strategies to optimize work life integration. Participants will examine personal and professional goals and learn strategies to negotiate conflicting priorities. At the end of this workshop, participants will gain insight, confidence, and a skillset to navigate work life integration.
