Negotiating in Academic Medicine: Program Overview (Full Description): In the course of our 90-minute session, we will have 1 guest speaker from the business world and 2 leaders in academic pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) review strategies for negotiation for junior faculty, senior faculty, and for leaders negotiating with colleagues within and outside of the division or department. Our first speaker, Kimberly Y. Chainey, JD, is the Executive Vice President, Global General Counsel, at AptarGroup, a global leader in drug delivery. Ms. Chainey will discuss the basics of negotiation with lessons to be learnt from the business world. Our second speaker, Nathan Kuppermann, MD, MPH, is the Bo Tomas Brofelt Endowed Chair of Emergency Medicine at the University of California-Davis and the principal investigator of the PRIME node of the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN). Dr. Kuppermann will discuss negotiating within your division or department. Our third speaker, Joseph L. Wright, MD, MPH, is the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Capital Region Health within the University of Maryland Medical System. Dr. Wright will discuss considerations in negotiating between your division and your department or medical school. Following Dr. Wright’s presentation, all 3 speakers will participate in a panel discussion with the audience. The audience can submit questions during the talks, and these will be compiled thematically by the SIG co-chairs to allow for a more robust conversation during the panel discussion.
