Energy intake recommendations in early childhood must balance the rapid growth and
brain development that occurs during infancy with the relationship between growth
patterns in early childhood and the risk of disordered metabolism (e.g., metabolic
syndrome, obesity) in adulthood. There is new evidence regarding energy expenditure
across the life span and the distinctions and similarities specific to the perinatal time and
during infancy as compared to other stages. This session will review the most recent
data on daily energy needs as defined through an international consortium and provide
context and considerations for public health dietary recommendations.
