Reflective practice in medicine stimulates deep learning, resilience, and professionalism. Writing is a potent modality for reflective practice, and narrative medicine is an increasingly recognized discipline in medical education. This highly interactive workshop will provide participants with a safe opportunity to experience and explore principles of narrative medicine, as well as tools to create and facilitate narrative medicine activities for learners and peers.
In this workshop, we will review foundational concepts of narrative medicine using the lens of medical education. Carefully selected media and texts will then provoke discussion, reflection, and writing. We will review tools and best practices for creating narrative medicine-based activities for learners, and practice their application. Participants will leave with a resource sheet to support future planning.
Consider attending this workshop if you are hoping to enhance your connection to patients, to colleagues, and to what “matters” in medicine; if you are interested in preventing burnout and promoting wellness; and if you want another way to support development of your learners along their trajectory toward independent practice.
