The 2020 AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) report “Identification, Evaluation and Management of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” recommends that pediatricians work with patients and families to address co-occurring medical and behavioral conditions, such as sleep problems, feeding disorders, ADHD, anxiety and wandering. As a first step, national support groups have advocated for practices and institutions to become “autism friendly,” e.g., adopt environmental adaptation, assure staff awareness, provide sensory supports and individualize care. Resident clinics, facing challenges with scheduling access and continuity of care, may ask “how?” This workshop, based on the 10 Building Blocks of High Performing Primary Care (UCSF Center of Excellence for Primary Care), will provide participants with roadmaps and tools for facilitating substantive clinic transformation into “autism friendly” practices. Led by a diverse faculty (i.e., parent / advocate, occupational therapist, psychiatrist, continuity clinic director), we will highlight 4 of the Building Blocks: team-based care, patient-practice partnership, population management and care coordination. Through a combination of short didactics and small group work, participants will (a) reimagine clinic environment (including staff roles, ideal work flows, patient and family collaboration, and community engagement); (b) discuss potential enablers and barriers; and (c) complete individualized workbooks with planning steps tailored to their clinics. At the end of the session, participants will identify their three adoptable steps and describe methods for sustainability.
