There has been significant attention devoted to understanding better how medical educators can reach millennial learners--those born in the 1980’s and 1990’s--through active learning strategies and the embracing technology. Less well understood, however, is how pediatricians can leverage an understanding of Gen-Zers and millennials to improve bedside communication to parents. This workshop will focus specifically on case-based instruction as well as the development of a plan for implementing Gen-Z and millennial-centric communication strategies for learners at participants’ home institutions.
In this workshop, participants will first learn about the characteristics of the Gen-Z and millennial generations and each group’s preferred learning methods. This will include a review of strategies for engagement. The use of technology and examples of successful efforts to reach these parents will be discussed, both from medical and from educational, business, and marketing domains.
Cases of communication challenges drawn from real-world scenarios will be presented in facilitator-led small groups and participants will discuss engagement strategies. Following a large group report-out from these cases, participants will learn how to design initiatives to reach Gen-Z and millennial parents at their home institutions. Using a novel matrix tool created specifically for this workshop, attendees will be guided through an approach to organize their thinking, perform a needs assessment, identify key stakeholders, and strategize best approaches to implementation. In a second small group session, participants will also strategize ways to integrate Gen-Z- and millennial-centric communication strategies into a curriculum.
