Academic faculty are often unprepared and unsupported for even thinking about, much less for actually making, effective career transitions, including retirement, part-time work, or significant role shifts. This workshop provides a forum for exploration with other professionals who are considering, moving through, or have made late-career transitions. Facilitators have studied faculty transitions and are in various stages of transition themselves. This interactive workshop includes individual, small and large group activities for active learning, including worksheets, polling, card-sorting tasks and case-based discussions. Participants will explore their perceptions about transition, learn frameworks for career transition (e.g. Schlossberg's 4S Transition Model, Bridges Transition Model and Sugarman's Life Span Model) and strategies for addressing specific challenges, identify personal priorities and make action plans. Participants will leave this workshop with a toolkit for planning their late career transitions.
