Formal training in Quality Improvement (QI) and Patient Safety (PS) skills is now required by ACGME in both residency, and fellowship training programs, as well as for maintenance of certification for practicing pediatricians. Incorporating QI/PS education into training programs is a daunting task especially in smaller programs, or programs whose educators are not themselves formally trained in these areas. This session will introduce a 90 page, 15 chapter QI/PS workbook, developed and implemented by the workshop leaders. The workbook consists of 15 one-hour interactive sessions intended to be incorporated into any program’s larger didactic curriculum. We will train attendees in the use of the chapters to guide their own QI/PS program. Attendees will experience the way in which the workbook simultaneously instructs residents in QI and PS methodology, while guiding trainees as they develop their own QI projects or PS reviews. We will demonstrate how residents or fellows can follow the steps to complete their projects and prepare to submit them for presentation or publication, all before the conclusion of their second year. Attendees will experience the user friendly format that requires no special prior training for instructors. Attendees will practice use of the workbook, by working through several sections, including chapter 4, “Outcome Measures,” and two exercises in Chapter 15, “ Just Culture.” They will be provided with a hard copy and a flash-drive of the workbook to take with them.
