Nearly 1 in 5 children are diagnosed with a mental, emotional, behavioral health (MEB) disorder, while only 20% of those receive care from a specialized MEB provider. The COVID 19 pandemic has exacerbated the MEB crisis in our country and placed a spotlight on the inequities in MEB care. Medical providers are desperately seeking a framework with evidence-based tools to support children and families with MEB issues.
This workshop will provide participants with a framework to address MEB issues in their practice, including evidence-based strategies to use to counsel and guide families during these difficult times. We will practice how to create and utilize a functional behavioral assessment to assess problem behavior, and devise strategies to improve the behavior. We will practice core components of differential attention to build caregiver-child bond and improve emotion regulation, including positive reinforcement and planned ignore. Additionally, we will incorporate approaches to give effective commands and build a child’s self-esteem. We will discuss how motivational interviewing techniques can be used to aid families in implementing a behavioral plan in the home.
Most of the workshop will be spent in active learning. There will be a brief introduction to each topic followed by small group breakouts using case discussions, role-plays, and video analysis. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on what was learned, practice the strategies, and discuss how to apply them in everyday practice. Participants will leave with a toolkit of strategies they can use to mitigate the negative impact of COVID-19.
