The digital revolution in medical education has been recently accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Podcasts are a natural part of this acceleration as a tool for convenient asynchronous methods of engaging with learners.
Learners highlight the sense of community, ease of use and ability to personalize their own learning by using podcasts. Evidence for best practices in podcasting for medical education is emerging and is mostly focused on learner preferences regarding aspects of format and quality metrics derived from expert opinion.
The workshop is hands-on and is designed for educators who are current and prospective users of podcasts. The overall goal of this session is to demystify practical aspects of podcasting and inspire participants to apply this technique where appropriate for their educational practice.
During the session participants will plan and record a brief podcast segment alongside experienced podcasters including (Cribsiders, PedsRAP, PHM from Pittsburgh, Primary Care Perspectives, Pediatrics on Call, and PedsCases). This will be done in small groups divided based on interests:
Podcasts for CME
Podcasts for local use
Podcast use by journals or societies
Podcasts recorded by trainees
Advanced audio (using Logic Pro)
No pre-session work is required however participants are encouraged to review our resources and recorded materials at medpodcasting.org. This will include tips for audio recording, hardware suggestions, examples of existing educational podcasts, and summary of important literature on use of podcasting for medical education. Participants may bring their own laptop with Audacity (https://www.audacityteam.org) installed for use during the session.
