Several curricula on the impact of racism on health have been published, the majority of which are focused on trainees. Faculty members are expected to teach and model the principles of health equity, but often feel ill-equipped to do so as many trained before antiracism and health equity became standard elements of residency curricula. The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Board of Pediatrics, Academic Pediatric Association, and other professional organizations have released statements encouraging workforce development on diversity, inclusion, and equity. However, there is very limited literature on faculty development related to these topics.
Thus, we developed a curriculum for faculty education on racism and actions faculty can take to impact health equity. Curriculum development was informed by adult learning principles and a comprehensive review of the professional development, medical education, and health equity literature. The curriculum consists of four sessions that can be presented longitudinally and incorporates didactics, cases, reflection, small and large group discussion, and evaluation. Topics include the history of structural racism, racism in health care, interacting with trainees and colleagues, and equity in policy. This workshop will introduce participants to the curriculum, including outcomes data from the implementation of the curriculum in our institution. Participants will reflect upon the faculty training needs in their own institutions and create a plan to implement this curriculum or other professional development trainings. The workshop leaders will also provide access to an online portal with several resources to facilitate implementation of the curriculum, including readings, PowerPoint presentations, and evaluation forms.
