For the past decade, payers and policy makers have called for a shift from fee-for-service payments to
payments based on value and accountable care organizations. Until these actually arrive, various
interim “quality” payments are becoming a larger part of physician payment. As many of these models
are grounded in adult practice and chronic disease management, pediatricians often find themselves
struggling to understand how these changes impact their clinical practice. In this workshop, we will
describe the rapidly changing landscape of payment models in public and commercial insurance
plans, highlight ways in which new payment models impact pediatric practice (particularly in the
academic setting) and work with participants to develop a concrete action plan for local advocacy and
practice transformation to adapt to the changing payment landscape.
