Physicians leaders are increasingly called upon to enhance value by improving outcomes for patients, while reducing costs. In this workshop, participants will expand their knowledge of QI methods, to learn how a well-crafted QI project can bring value to an organization. This workshop will include cost classifications, return on investment calculations, a comparison of reimbursement schemes and a review of indirect benefits which affect the value equation in QI. The workshop will begin with a review of the components of QI project design, including the team composition and QI methods. Following this presentation, participants will be placed into small groups, with a facilitator. Using polling and facilitated discussion, participants will be presented with a QI project and asked to assemble the team and choose a QI method for inclusion into the business plan. Then, the presenters will review classification of costs and ROI calculations. Polling will be employed, with participants organizing different costs by classification and calculating a ROI. In a third session, presenters will review how different reimbursement models can impact value in QI, followed by a facilitated discussion in small groups highlighting the indirect benefits that QI can bring to an organization. The final activity will be a Gallery Walk, where participants review the different business components of QI project design, adding their own comments. The session will end with a review of the Gallery Walk, facilitating further discussion. Pre-reading for this workshop will include “The Business Case for Quality Improvement” and an assigned quality improvement article.
