The conditions in where newborns and their families are born, live, learn, play, and age will influence their short- and long-term health and well-being. Every day, many newborns are discharged into homes and communities ravaged by the effects of racism, classism, and discrimination. Increasingly, clinicians and health systems must grapple with the fundamental inequities that lie upstream of disparate outcomes to make tangible progress toward health justice. Newborn care providers are uniquely positioned to help families address inequities.
In this session, attendees will learn how to follow through, or how to practice social, and not just technical, medicine. Follow through is a comprehensive approach that begins before birth and continues into childhood where health professionals, families, and communities partner together to meet the social and medical needs of infants and families. Examples of follow through that will be presented by this panel include: Screening Families for Social Risks and Referring to Social Supports; Developing Meaningful Clinical-Community Partnerships; Leveraging Community Health Workers to Support Families; and Supporting Co-design of Quality Improvement Strategies with Parents.
The goal of this session is to equip people with ideas that they can take to their local settings and implement with community and family partners. This session may be particularly useful for multidisciplinary teams that attend together.
