IgA Nephropathy (IGAN) and Henoch Schoenlein purpura (HSP) nephritis share important pathogenic features. However, the presentation and clinical course the IgAN and HSP can vary significantly. More recently, chronic HSP nephritis has been termed IgA vasculitis (IgAV) suggesting a spectrum of the same disease. Significant advances have been made in understanding the pathophysiology of IgAN but less is known about HSP/IGAV. The role of histologic staging in prognosis is poorly defined in children. Clinical management options remain somewhat limited and controversial for both diseases. This session will examine the pathophysiology, clinical course, treatment options and staging and prognosis of IGAN and HSP/IGAV.
