Given the crisis in child mental, emotional and behavioral (MEB) health exacerbated by the pandemic there is growing awareness about the central role of relational health in healthy development and the importance of trusted relationships between parents and children (synchrony), parents and pediatricians and pediatricians and community services. The pediatric well care is a high yield context for fostering these relationships, preventing and mitigating impacts of childhood adversity and mental health problems and for building resilience and wellbeing. The focus of this symposium is to present new research relevant to these priorities. We will first report on new research on the prevalence and disparities in MEB problems among US children and the distinct role of relational and social health risks. Next, we will discuss the science of relationship-centered screening and the shared family agenda as the foundation for optimizing the pediatric well visit to promote relational health and prevent and mitigate childhood adversity in the broader context of the needs and priorities of the whole child and family. Research on approaches to operationalize these goals in pediatric practices emerging from the AAP's Addressing Social Health and Early Childhood Wellness Learning Collaborative and the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative's Cycle of Engagement Well Visit Planner implementation studies will be set forth. A group discussion will be held regarding strategies, technologies, skills, knowledge, beliefs, structures and policies needed to establish feasible methods that enable integrated, comprehensive and personalized well care while centering the promotion of early relational health in well care.
