Inequities in healthcare delivery and health outcomes among children and adolescents are ubiquitous and longstanding. Data continue to grow demonstrating the role of racism and other social determinants of health as contributors to inequities. And yet, deficiencies within education across the entire continuum and in our health care system contribute to health inequities in unacceptable ways. This session will provide an opportunity for participants to develop a better understanding of the role of racism and other SDH on exacerbating pediatric health inequities. Additionally, we will highlight competency-based medical education as an approach to address existing deficiencies in addressing these contributors to inequities across the continuum. The American Board of Pediatrics has established entrustable professional activities (EPAs) as the competency-based medical education framework for the future in our specialty, and in this session, we will describe the development and content of a revised EPA entitled: “Use population health strategies and quality improvement methods to promote health and address racism, discrimination, and other contributors to inequities among pediatric populations.’ We also highlight the ways in which this EPA can be used to inform curricula, assessment, professional development and organizational systems, and culture change for all pediatric trainees, pediatricians, and subspecialists.
