Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) was defined more than 50 years ago. Since then, there has been much research on short term outcomes but great uncertainty remains about the ethical, policy and long-term issues of this stigmatising condition. The diagnosis of NAS lacks clarity, impeding innovation, coordination and improvement in outcomes for children and families.
NAS remains a a clinician and policy centred diagnosis and the voice of lived experience, which is crucial to promote equity of care, innovation, inclusiveness and support, remains woefully silent.
As clinicians, policy makers and international organizations, we must look beyond the short-term to unravel the complex Gideon’s knot of social, medical and political challenges associated with NAS and to generate and implement innovative evidence-based, feasible, globally acceptable and sustainable strategies to improve the outcomes of children with NAS
Our diverse global group of speakers include:
1. Dr Jonathan Davis (neonatologist, US) discussing the impact of NAS treatment on long-term outcomes
2. Dr Stacy Blythe (translational scientist & foster carer, Australia) discussing the need for incorporating carer needs and knowledge to improve outcomes for NAS children
3. Ms Lauren Dicair (adult with a history of NAS, USA) discussing lived experience with the diagnosis of NAS
4. Dr Elisabeth Saenz (Liaison Officer, United Nations Office of Drug Control, Switzerland) discussing the global need to collaborate, generate guidance and develop strategies to address long-term outcomes of children with NAS.
