Antibiotic stewardship has been defined as "coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antibiotic agents." More than 80% of all antibiotics given to children are prescribed in the outpatient setting, and ambulatory stewardship is increasingly recognized as a target area for focused attention. During this session, national leaders will highlight novel approaches to outpatient pediatric stewardship and discuss useful and effective outpatient stewardship interventions and techniques. These will include description of new areas of stewardship focus, suggested novel metrics for providers to use in benchmarking their antibiotic prescribing habits, harnessing electronic tools to drive improvement, identifying key issues that drive disparate antibiotic prescribing based on race and location, and learning ways to provide more equitable antibiotic prescribing. This session will therefore provide practical tools for participants to improve the quality of their antibiotic prescribing, will address important issues of equity in medicine, and will be relevant to general pediatricians, hospitalists, emergency medicine and infectious diseases specialists, and those who work in emergency departments, urgent care centers, ambulatory clinics, and ambulatory health care systems.
