Pregnant patients and newborn infants are at high risk for COVID-19. Our understanding of potential vertical and horizontal transmission of SARS-CoV-2 has evolved over the last two years. Early vaccine trials did not include pregnant patients, though more recent trials focused on this population are ongoing. Results from longitudinal population-based surveillance of pregnant patients with COVID-19 and their newborns and observational and randomized clinical trials of vaccination during pregnancy are emerging. This Hot Topic Symposia will discuss the currently known impact of COVID-19 on pregnant patients and newborns and potential avenues of maternal and neonatal protection, as well as the real-life influence on families most at risk. We include pediatric experts in infectious diseases, neonatology, and perinatal epidemiology.
