The purpose of this workshop is for primary care providers to review and be able to implement the evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and associated comorbidities. PCOS is a multi-system condition that requires a personalized, comprehensive approach-to-care. The 2018 PCOS International Guidelines described updated diagnostic criteria for adolescents and comprehensive screening measures, and included input from the patient community, as women with PCOS have reported being incredibly dissatisfied with the diagnosis process for PCOS, including first encounters as adolescents. However, these guidelines have had have poor dissemination in the primary pediatric literature. This proposal is in direct response to concerns raised regarding the early accurate diagnosis and the provision of comprehensive care, identified as major hurdles in the recent NIH PCOS conference. We founded our Children’s Hospital Colorado multi-disciplinary PCOS clinic in 2012 and have published PCOS QI methods and on our multi-disciplinary clinic model. In this session, each talk will be given by topical experts from our multi-disciplinary PCOS clinic including: adolescent medicine, adolescent gynecology, endocrinology, nutrition, dermatology and psychology. Topics to meet the stated objectives will include: Diagnosis of PCOS in adolescents; hormone therapy options, cardiometabolic risks and therapies, diet strategies, dermatology beyond acne, mood challenges and the role of sleep. We will also discuss how to approach this diagnosis in a primary care setting, recognizing the shortage of sub-specialists for referral, and critical role of the primary care provider in making the initial diagnosis and triage of comorbidities.
