The increasing prevalence of mental and behavioral health emergencies continues to impact health and well-being of children and adolescents in the United States. This has now reached an epidemic level, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), recently declared it a national emergency. The mission of the Emergency Medical Services for Children Innovation and Improvement Center (EIIC) is to transform healthcare processes and improve outcomes for ill or injured children across the emergency care continuum. EIIC recognizes the need to improve the infrastructure and access to care for children presenting with mental and behavioral emergencies, ranging from suicidality and depression to agitation and disruptive behavior. Therefore, the EIIC has partnered with several national organizations, and convened an expert multi-disciplinary team to conduct a needs assessment and a gap analysis to identify the most pressing and important areas of mental and behavioral health to target for resource development. In this panel discussion, EIIC and partner organizations efforts in addressing mental and behavioral health crisis will be discussed.
