Background: The mental health needs of pediatric patients diagnosed with diabetes, whether type 1 or 2, have undoubtedly been a topic of great relevance to improve the quality of life of the patient and his or her family, as well as to avoid potential more severe psychosocial and behavioral problems in the future. Undoubtedly, the adverse conditions derived from the pandemic pose additional stress factors among patients and their parents.
Objective: Objective was to determine the most prevalent conflicts faced by parents of pediatric diabetic patients during COVID-19.
Design/Methods: Information was collected during virtual and face-to-face visits from 49 parents from low socioeconomic backgrounds on the most significant problems encountered during the course of the pandemic in relation to their children diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Content analysis of an open-ended question was used to report the themes raised by parents on the most relevant conflicts presented during the pandemic. Previously published relevant research was reviewed to determine initial themes that included Stigma, Positive changes in self-management of this disease, etc. Two independent reviewers examined the responses for key concepts related to the initial themes. Each individual response was classified into several final themes based on its content.
Results: From the initial themes available in the scientific evidence, we established a framework for classifying the conflicts identified by parents included in table 1.Lack of control of the disease or difficulties in adjusting to a new diagnosis were the most frequently mentioned, followed by psychosocial conflicts. Difficulties in obtaining medical care and support were also frequently cited. Conclusion(s): Stigma was not mentioned by this sample of parents, but the problems mentioned by them are very relevant with respect to their health and should be considered for the benefit of families and patients.
