Hitting the Ground Running: Maximizing the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Academic Onboarding for New Faculty
How can we maximize the efficiency by which we orient and onboard health care professionals to the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities of an academic faculty position? Are there domains that are particular to an academic faculty member at your specific division or institution that can be streamlined for a new hire? Are there general topics relevant to all new faculty members, that are inadvertently left for them to figure out the “hard way”? Whether it is the pathway for academic advancement in one’s field, institutional resources to promote scholarship, the hospital credentialling process, or what the difference between CME and MOC is, it can be challenging for a new faculty member to learn the ropes in an efficient manner. We propose that purposeful onboarding can allow new hires to feel more satisfied in their roles and perform their duties more effectively, in a shorter period of time.
The APA co-chairs for the Faculty Development SIG and the Division Directors SIG have joined forces to host a session to share best practices on maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of academic onboarding for new faculty. This interactive workshop is intended for everyone from trainees hoping to gain insights about transitioning into a faculty position, as well as for those in a faculty leadership role looking to optimize the acclimatization of new faculty.
