Joy and meaning in work are inherent in the practice of pediatrics. Our deep commitment to our work, however, may amplify the trauma associated with challenging clinical scenarios, including unanticipated patient outcomes, medical errors, and difficult interactions. Experiencing trauma as a second victim may have serious adverse consequences for personal well-being, career engagement, and patient care.
Our workshop introduces practical, evidence-based strategies to promote recovery after experiencing a challenging event. In addition, we introduce a practical, user-friendly framework for providing peer support to colleagues and trainees who have experienced similar events.
Through polling, facilitated small group discussions, large group debriefings, and demonstrations, participants will identify new tools for coping with the challenges of our work. Participants will leave with new personal resiliency and peer support strategies to implement at their home institutions, as well as resources for personal and peer reference.
