Teamwork is an essential component of the medical profession. We work in teams to care for patients, implement inter-professional quality improvement initiatives, conduct research, and train the next generation of health care professionals. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) program emphasizes the importance of the clinical care team and introduced a new Teaming focus area to its 2019 Version 2.0 of the CLER Pathways to Excellence to recognize the role that teamwork has in providing safe and effective care. However, health care professionals are rarely trained to effectively lead teams.
This workshop will provide participants with a framework to understand, analyze and build effective teams. After introductions, participants will work in pairs to discuss challenges of working in teams. A large group brainstorming session will then identify characteristics of effective teams. A brief didactic based on Patrick Lencioni’s work will introduce participants to a hierarchical model of team dysfunctions, including absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. Participants will then work in small groups to use the framework to develop solutions to a case of a dysfunctional team. Following the large group debriefing in which ideas are shared, participants will make a commitment to action to help identify goals for their own team leadership roles and will receive a prompt to work on those goals after the workshop. Resources will be provided that can be used to foster healthy and effective team dynamics.
