Futurists assert that “gamification” has become one of the most effective educational approaches in our generations. Gamification helps learners find personal connections, motivate engagement in learning and transfer knowledge into practice. Well-designed gamification pushes learners to immerse in a learning space that promotes repeated learning and practice—a fail early, fail often for success mindset. Many educators and game industries have attempted to produce games for learning, a serious game, without clear educational frameworks, and thus with limited success.
This workshop will introduce the “RECIPE” for meaningful gamification, a set of theory-informed principles to incorporate gaming into the learning process. Participants will learn key elements of gamification that stimulate intrinsic motivation and engagement among learners. Participants will practice designing a “choose your own adventure (CYOA)” module, an example of an effective, reproducible gamification strategy that can be used in many types of educational environments.
This workshop is designed to scaffold complex frameworks through an inquiry-based learning. Specifically, participants will compare and contrast meaningful gamification from serious gaming. Brief didactics will introduce principles, tips and tools for gamification. Participants will then engage in a fast pace, modular learning with hands-on small group tasks exploring exemplary applications of meaningful gamification. For application, participants will learn how to create a CYOA module as a low-cost, highly reproducible platform for gamification. In small groups, using structured worksheets, participants will design a CYOA module on a chosen topic. The workshop will end with discussion about ideas for implementation of meaningful gamification in each participant’s educational practice.
