We are in the midst of a pediatric mental health crisis. There is a shortage of providers to care for pediatric patients with mental health concerns and significant racial, social and geographic disparities exist in access to mental health services. Pediatricians and pediatric residents are essential to providing care for patients struggling with mental health concerns. While assessing and managing mental health problems is an Entrustable Professional Activity for Pediatric Residents, many pediatric residents are not trained or struggle to apply these skills. This workshop will focus on methods aimed at training pediatric residents to provide care to patients with mental health concerns, through expanded curriculum development and resource identification. During this workshop, participants will partake in an interactive group game to increase comfort around identifying local resources and developing partnerships with community organizations. Participants will learn tips from psychiatric providers, who are part of an integrated mental health team within the medical home and help train pediatric residents. Curricular content and educational strategies will be explored via interactive small groups to identify appropriate elements for individualized curriculums, tailored to each participants’ unique settings and institutions. During the workshop, all participants will receive a toolkit of resources and complete a structured implementation guide. Participants can then utilize this toolkit to help operationalize lessons learned back at their home institutions.
