Shared decision-making has become a cornerstone of medical decision-making over the past two decades. Prior models of decision-making emphasized medical paternalism in which the doctor had the expertise and thus dictated the information given to a family and the determined course of treatment. More recently, the emphasis for medical decision-making has shifted to empower patients and families to have full access to medical information, with access to scholarly research as well as access to their own medical records through electronic health portals. A shared decision-making model continues to utilize a physician’s expertise while elucidating patient goals and preferences to determine a course of treatment. The process of SDM is, by its nature, complex and varied depending on the clinical situation and background, cultures, and values of both the provider and the patient. Shared decision-making is even more complex in pediatrics as the authoritative decision-maker is usually the patient’s parent, not the patient themselves, thus inviting further questions about the proper role of the child in decision-making. The general goals for this session are to update the audience on recent scholarly- and practice-related developments around the framework of shared decision-making in pediatrics, as well as provide practical takeaways for applying shared decision-making to clinical practice.
