It takes a Village: Partnering with Families in Research Design: Logistics, Language considerations, and Practice: This workshop will help participants enrich their research by engaging patients and families as research partners, in line with patient- and family-centered care principles supported by the Institute of Medicine. Involving families throughout all stages of a study can improve recruitment, retention and patient-centered outcomes. Engaging with families in this way may be even more important when conducting research in under-resourced communities, especially with those who prefer a non-English language.
This interactive session, led by researchers in collaboration with family research advisors, will discuss practical approaches to meaningfully engage with families to develop and conduct research and quality improvement projects. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Describe ethical considerations when working with patients and community members who prefer a language other than English and/or are from under-resourced communities
2) Develop strategies for partnering with community organizations/families in research projects
3) Apply technology to support recruitment and retention in research with populations that are historically challenging to reach.
