Achieving equity requires purposeful programming designed to mitigate the systems that contribute to disparities in academic achievement, career advancement, leadership acquisition, and health outcomes. As is often the case when examining achievement disparities, many critique the limitations of educational and healthcare systems but struggle to examine how systemic inequities such as unfair housing practices, food insecurity, inadequate healthcare, poverty, mass incarceration, discrimination, and the lack of meaningful employment link in powerful ways to obstruct family viability and educational outcomes of those from historically marginalized communities. It is the coalescing of these systemic inequalities that breathes life into systemic racism. The panelist will outline the evolution of the APA’s Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee and it’s integration into organizational structure. Original research identifying the disparities amongst pediatric trainees will be explored and how this links to inequities within academic medicine and health outcomes. Achievement gaps within academic medicine, career progression, and leadership acquisition are the manifestations of opportunity gaps. Addressing achievement gaps without also addressing opportunity gaps is a flawed approach to improved achievement amongst underrepresented groups in medicine. Leaders within the APA Anti-racism Task Force will outline how the charge of the Task Force was operationalized and embedded within the policies and procedures of the organization. The fundamental pedagogy of deliberate pathway programing will be reviewed and mapped to organizational priorities with an emphasis on outcomes and accountability. Attendees will leave this session armed with knowledge of the structural barriers within academic pediatrics and the tools to dismantle those barriers.
