Optimal nutritional provision is one of the most important and challenging aspects of caring for children with chronic kidney disease. More than any single “renal diet,” nutritional prescriptions must be individualized according to each child’s energy and electrolyte requirements according to age, urine output, underlying kidney disease and comorbidities, and available resources. The purpose of this session is highlight current research in the basic science behind growth and growth failure in children with CKD, challenges and controversies in the provision of nutrition to infants and young children, important considerations regarding the nutritional support for critically ill patients with acute kidney injury, and strategies for identifying structural barriers to adequate nutritional support.
