Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (TnECHO) is increasingly recognized as a useful tool in assessment of hemodynamic status and management of cardiovascular compromise in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units and in cardiac intensive care units. However, the widespread use of TnECHO has been hampered by several obstacles including the limited opportunity to learn the skills. In this workshop, we will have 15 mannequin-based haptic echocardiographic simulators capable of simulating a full range of neonatal two-dimensional, color flow Doppler, spectral Doppler and M-mode echocardiograms. The main simulator screen displays the full range of 17 echocardiographic views and the side screen displays the position and motion of the cutting planes through a three-dimensional heart model. The system includes a software module to perform hemodynamic measurements from specific video clip images. The learner will be introduced to the standard 17 echocardiographic views with a hands-on approach using the simulator. Learners will practice 8/17 echocardiographic views in a preterm infant with patent ductus arteriosus through parasternal short axis and or ductal cut to estimate the size and shunt direction, visual assessment of cardiac function through apical 4 chamber view, presence or absence of pericardial effusion, and preload status by evaluating inferior vena cava size. The workshop comprises a 30-minute introduction and review of the standard views and a 30-minute hands-on practice. Each simulator will be used by 2 learners and 30 learners can participate in the workshop. Leaders and Co-Leaders have extensive experience in using TnECHO in their daily practice.
