Gender disparities are well documented in medicine despite the growing majority of women physicians, especially in pediatrics. Intersectional identities like race, sexuality, and religion can further widen gender-based disparities. Advocacy is crucial to changing this outdated dynamic and achieving the full potential of the pediatric workforce. This workshop will initiate participants on the path to change and equip them with tangible tools to lead to immediate action.
The workshop will kick-off with an expert panel on women in pediatric leadership, gender and intersectional disparities in pediatrics, and advocacy tools for change. Participants will then break into three tracks, working in small, interactive, facilitated groups to create deliverables advocating for change at three levels:
1) Institutionally (university, hospital, or practice) – focused on how to build local women in pediatrics groups, investigate and disseminate existing disparities, build oversight, and plan targeted interventions. Output will be an outline of a strategic plan to present to your institutional leadership.
2) Field/specialty - focused on how to engage with your field’s existing women’s network or build one if does not yet exist. Participants will partner with other members of their specialty for enhanced efficacy. Output will be a draft of a call to action statement on gender and intersectional equity to present to your society or section’s leadership.
3) Nationally across pediatrics - focused on how to align interventions across pediatric subspecialties. Output will be a draft of an American Academy of Pediatrics Annual Leadership Forum Resolution.
