We have all sat through lectures that were so un-engaging that we find ourselves looking for the nearest exit for an early escape. In this workshop, we'll describe how to design sessions where escaping the mundane lecture is the primary learning objective!
Participants will learn to leverage to benefits of game-based learning, specifically the escape room model which uses puzzle based active learning, where learners are faced with an engaging problem and must explore multiple possible ways to find a solution. By incorporating active problem solving, learners can develop higher levels of learning, such as application and analysis. Participants will learn to leverage the Slumdog Concept, based on the experience of the protagonist in the movie Slumdog Millionaire, where participants make memories rather than memorize.
In this fun and interactive session, participants will first experience a mini ‘escape room’ style challenge in which they will team together to solve a series of unique puzzles and assignments using your combined medical knowledge, intuition, and detective work to work out a pediatric medical mystery. (The example has been successfully piloted with learners at the University of Minnesota). We will then review several strategies for how to design escape rooms, what types of puzzles can be used, and how to stay focused on learning objectives during the design and facilitation. Each participant will leave with a toolkit of modifiable content for application to their own escape room design.
