Ultrasound guidance for lumbar puncture (LP) has become an increasingly useful aid to an otherwise-difficult procedure in a patient with abnormal landmarks due to obesity, spinal curvature, other anatomical abnormalities, or previously failed attempts. This workshop will provide the simple tools necessary to use ultrasound to improve success in the LP of a more challenging patient as well as the applicability of ultrasonography in neonates to ensure a safe level of access and determine the probability of a futile LP due to either minimal CSF or the presence of hematoma from prior attempts. Participants will learn ultrasound basics, image acquisition techniques, and the anatomy of interest for an LP using hands-on practice with instructors and models. A review of difficult cases and troubleshooting will help participants learn how to apply their ultrasound skills in real clinical situations to optimize success and patient comfort. This workshop is designed for hospitalists or other inpatient providers who routinely do bedside lumbar punctures and are familiar with the procedure. Logistics of the procedure itself will not be covered in detail; rather, this is an overview of how ultrasound can be helpful for assessing landmarks and planning for a successful lumbar puncture.
