As increasing numbers of residents pursue subspecialty careers, they must have adequate career exploration and professional development to ensure competitive standing in fellowship matches. Our team created this workshop to highlight current and evolving mentorship needs and empower educators to effectively address these needs. Our collective experience as hospitalists will be transformed into lessons and resources that can be applied to any subspecialty.
We will share how we have successfully established and optimized subspecialty based electives, tracks and curricula within our own institutions and facilitate participant discussion on challenges and solutions for creating subspecialty specific educational programming.
Building on data gathered from national needs assessments, we will review “best practices” to tailor advising to individual residents pursuing fellowship and how to guide residents toward opportunities that will enhance an application. We will also tackle challenging topics such as coaching a resident who did not successfully match into fellowship. To conclude, we will facilitate an interactive large group discussion to address questions and needs posed by the participants regarding mentorship of the subspecialty bound resident.
Workshop attendees will be given a toolkit to assist in resident mentorship and development of preparatory curricula, electives and tracks. This repository will include templates of residency tracks, establishment of electives and relevant experiences, and mentor and mentee worksheets.
