Women in pediatrics have experienced gender inequities in salary and leadership. An area identified in leading to these inequities is that women are at a disadvantage when negotiating for salary or positions. Interventions have been identified to understand the differences between genders in negotiations and learn specific skills that women can use to effectively negotiate.
Fellows and faculty in pediatric subspecialties at all career levels interested in learning or improving their negotiating skills should attend. We encourage those in university subspecialties as well as private practice subspecialists to join.
We will provide information dealing with key aspects of negotiation for women in pediatric subspecialties. We will discuss differences between genders when negotiating, how to address compensation and benefits, resources, time, contracts, and discuss a personalized negotiation plan. We will focus specifically on disadvantages women face in negotiating and how to address and overcome these disadvantages.
Working in small, interactive, facilitated groups, participants will identify their negotiating strengths and knowledge. Through role-play and facilitator guidance, participants will have an opportunity to improve specific skills in negotiation and receive feedback. Group leaders will coach participants on negotiation skills such as identifying BATNA, what to negotiate for in their careers, develop a personal negotiation plan, and general skills of negotiation. Scenarios will be provided to practice negotiation skills:
#1 – Negotiation prior to starting your first job
#2 – Negotiating for changes within the current job or a mid/late-career job change
#3 – Negotiation for those starting or are in private practice neonatology
