Participants will gain knowledge of and skills in the decision-making process for rational use of psychotropic medications for children and adolescents. Workshop leaders consist of a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers including two board-certified child psychiatrists, a primary care pediatrician, a clinical pharmacist, and a researcher. The leaders will introduce the concept of “deprescribing” and why it is important to primary care providers. Also, the workshop will describe best practices and review toolkits available to guide this process. Through ongoing interaction with the leaders, participants will work through case studies to determine when deprescribing should be considered and how to initiate, implement, and monitor the process. The workshop will include both large group didactic and interactive activities and small working groups in which participants will develop a deprescribing plan on case studies. The case studies will be presented to the full group with discussion of best practices. The leaders will use a variety of activities including role-playing, interactive audience engagement, and case scenarios for children of different ages and a variety of diagnoses and medication classes. The primary target audience is primary care physicians, trainees, and advanced practice nurses. However, all conference attendees are welcome.
