Pediatricians are increasingly managing children with special health care needs, many of whom have lung disease and require airway clearance regiments. These regiments are often initiated by pulmonologists but may need to be managed or adapted in real time by a general pediatrician, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The objective of the workshop is to provide a general pediatrician and hospitalist audience with training on the rationale and application of airway clearance therapies in pediatric patients. Interdisciplinary faculty and fellows will lead this interactive skill-building workshop. Participants will learn how to implement strategies to efficiently identify, assess, and provide initial guidance on airway clearance regiments for several pediatric conditions ranging from obstructive lung diseases to restrictive neuromuscular processes. Workshop content will also focus on the impact of health care disparities on the availability and practical use of airway clearance regiments. Workshop leaders will guide small groups through case discussions that underscore underlying pathophysiological principles of airway clearance, indications and contraindications for specific techniques, limitations of airway clearance regiments, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for these patients. There will be opportunities for participants to have hands-on interactions with commonly used equipment such as chest vest and cough assist devices. The workshop will conclude with participants working together to create a concrete plan to make changes in their practice and teaching, as well as distribution and review of a “pocket reference card” for easy access to airway clearance technique indications.
