Trends in Child Obesity during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Widening Disparities & Solution-Oriented Strategies to Power Forward: Disparities in obesity are persistent and pervasive among Black, Latinx and low-income children and families living in the U.S. Underlying drivers of such disparities including political will, economic disadvantage, and other social conditions such as racism have been amplified by the present COVID-19 crisis and threaten to curtail efforts to address pandemic-associated increases in obesity among children. Now more than ever, innovative multi-faceted and solution-oriented approaches are desperately needed to reduce the potential for widening inequities in obesity and stem the tide of the obesity epidemic.
We have gathered experts in epidemiologic trends in childhood obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic (Woolford), solution-oriented approaches to address racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in obesity disparities (Hernandez). These leaders will offer short presentations and help lead small group breakout discussions on their relevant content areas.
