Environmental Health, Climate Change and Sustainability SIG: Bringing Climate Change Action into Academia: This interactive workshop is intended to provide participants with opportunities and guidance on integrating climate change action into their academic practice through peer mentorship. Presenters will discuss ways they have engaged in climate action while supporting the foundations of academia: mentorship, education (for students and peers), research, service, advocacy and grant support. Break-out sessions and wrap-up will allow participants to share best ideas and to leave energized. Our goal is to support colleagues in sharing creative ways to advocate for climate action within academic practice so we can collectively support solutions to the increasing existential threat posed by climate change.
This interactive workshop will have a Part 1 Speaker Session, and Part 2 Speaker-Facilitated Break-Out Sessions. The following topics will be covered by these respective peer speakers:
- Teaching/Education/Trainee involvement – the founder of Medical Students for Sustainability (MS4S) will share experience of medical trainees in engaging in climate action work. Dr. Sandra Jee will share her experience with students involved in climate advocacy and expanding medical student curricula.
- Service/Advocacy and Mentorship – Dr. Vi Thuy Nguyen (aka Dr. PlasticPicker) will share unique ways to use social media, story-telling, student mentorship and creativity to expand one’s network of physician partners on climate advocacy, especially with respect to legislative change.
- Research and Funding – Dr. Maya Ragavan and Dr. Elizabeth Friedman will share ideas for transforming climate action work into scholarly work, including ways to publish and find funding.
