In response to acts of racial injustice in 2020, corporate organizations have acknowledged the damaging effects of divisive policies and dissonant workplace environments on productivity and employee well-being. Companies now are engaging in difficult but necessary conversations about race/ethnicity and the inequities generated by the status quo. A recent publication (Tulshyan, Harvard Business Review, June 30, 2020) challenged executive leaders to understand the history of bias and discrimination, institute internal anti-racism policies, and humbly seek and listen to advice from people of color. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has begun its own reformation, beginning with the acknowledgement of racism as a detriment to child health (Pediatrics, 144: e20191765 [2019]) and the error in its past racially restrictive membership policy (Pediatrics,146: e2020019794 [2020]). Additionally, the AAP has initiated internal discourse and restructuring while fostering a partnership with the Pediatric Section of the National Medical Association (NMA) to understand the issues related to patients, physicians, and staff of color. This plenary will highlight the collaborative work of the AAP and the NMA Pediatric Section undertaken over the past 36 months to synergistically promote equity, diversity, and inclusion, refuting the presumptive “zero-sum game” of organizational partnerships.
