Pediatric organizations are in the process of self-examination, searching for racism and bias baked into their organizations, and moving forward towards truly actionable anti-racism. This panel discussion will bring together leaders of the major pediatric organizations and research/publication platforms to share their viewpoints. Joseph Wright and Benard Dreyer will be co-chairs.
Benard Dreyer will be the moderator of the session. He is a former president of both the AAP and APA, as well as a former Board member of PAS. He has published several commentaries on racism and bias, and leads a group of pediatricians called PART (Pediatricians Against Racism and Trauma).
There will be 5 panelists:
First, Joseph Wright will speak about "Truth and Reconciliation: A Long Way to Go". He was instrumental in leading the truth and reconciliation and anti-racism efforts at the AAP, but here also very much represents the APS where he played a pivotal role in the organization's anti-racism efforts.
Second, Tiffani Johnson, from the APA, who will talk on implicit bias in medical care, a major area of her research career.
Third, Leslie Walker Harding, on the Board of AMSPDC will speak about translating equity science into action, going beyond the ivory tower.
Fourth, Dimitri Christakis, Editor-in-Chief of JAMA Pediatrics will give the vantage point of pediatric journals and share experiences regarding encouraging manuscripts that address racism and bias.
Fifth, David Nichols, President and CEO of the ABP will describe the initiatives that the ABP is leading in health equity and anti-racism.
