Research conducted in pediatric primary care practices within which residents have their continuity clinics provides an important opportunity to advance equitable care – by training the next generation of pediatricians and advancing clinical practice, particularly for children and families who are vulnerable due to poverty and structural racism. Over the past 2 decades, research in the continuity clinic setting has dramatically shaped the delivery of pediatric primary care, especially for underserved populations. This session will bring together national experts and researchers to discuss the progress that has been made to date along with future opportunities/challenges related to research in the pediatric continuity clinic setting. Presenters will highlight critical achievements in primary care research in academic settings, including how: 1) Research led to new recommendations and strategies for improving the uptake of childhood vaccinations; 2) Research linking the Reach Out and Read program to improvements in expressive and receptive language development in young children led to widespread adoption of the program; 3) Research that identified the importance of addressing social determinants of health prompted large scale initiatives to screen for and address social determinants as part of routine clinical care. This will be followed by a presentation describing the formation of the APA’s continuity clinic practice-based research network, CORNET, in 2002, including foundational principles and accomplishments related to advancing primary care research. The session will close with a panel discussion of leaders in pediatrics who will share their perspectives on what the future holds for primary care research in academic settings.
