There are ~4 million live births in the United States (US) annually, and the vast majority are healthy term or late preterm neonates who are cared for in well newborn units across the country. The Better Outcomes through Research for Newborns (BORN) network, a core activity of the Academic Pediatric Association (APA), comprises of over 90 well newborn units in the US and since 2010, the BORN network has led collaborative research projects to increase the evidence base for the care of term and late preterm newborns. There are many topics in well newborn medicine that are controversial, and there is considerable practice variation across sites.
In this session, 6 experienced newborn clinicians will debate 3 such topics in well newborn medicine to generate discussion and inspire clinicians, researchers and trainees interested in well newborn care and research. Debaters will be asked to include comments on how their viewpoint addresses health disparities in newborn medicine in their respective topic.
The 3 topics debated will be:
1. Newborn Drug Screening: Should every mother be screened?
2. Lactation support: Baby Friendly or Fed is Best?
3. Car seat screening: Is it finally time to discontinue this practice?
The 90 min session will be divided into 3 blocks of 30 mins. Topic 1-3: 10 mins each (speaker 1 and 2), 10 mins of questions/comments from audience (total 30 mins per topic). Two moderators will be present to facilitate flow of the debate and questions from the audience.
