lThe 2022 Milk Club will focus on some of the major innovations in breastfeeding and human milk research occurring simultaneously at the “micro-scale” and the “macro-scale.” While critical advances are accelerating our understanding of the potential benefits of the myriad nutrients, microbiota and immune-modulating components of milk, clinician-researchers are also devising and testing creative interventions to address long-standing disparities in access and provision of human milk to infants in critical need. Three researchers at the forefront of these microscale and macroscale innovations will join us to share recent developments in their lines of research. Dr. Nancy Krebs will describe the micronutrition of human milk and specifically when supplementation may be beneficial in specialized populations. Dr. Peggy Neville will draw on her extensive experience in lactation science to describe our current understanding of the interplay of biology and social/behavioral factors in lactation. Dr. Aloka Patel will describe her innovative work to narrow the racial disparities that persist in lactation outcomes.
